Gesine Müller: How Is World Literature Made? The Global Circulations of Latin American Literatures. Transl. by Marie Deer. Berlin/Boston: De Gruyter 2022.

The debate over the concept of world literature, which has been taking place with renewed intensity over the last twenty years, is tightly bound up with the issues of global interconnectedness in a polycentric world. Most recently, critiques of globalization-related conceptualizations, in particular, have made themselves heard: to what extent is the concept of world literature too closely connected with the political and economic dynamics of globalization? Such questions cannot be answered simply through theoretical debate. The material side of the production of world literature must therefore be more strongly integrated into the conversation than it has been.

Using the example of Latin American literatures, this volume demonstrates the concrete construction processes of world literature. To that purpose, archival materials have been analyzed here: notes, travel reports, and correspondence between publishers and authors. The Latin American examples provide particularly rich information about the processes of institutionalization in the Western world, as well as new perspectives for a contemporary mapping of world literature beyond the established dynamics of canonization.

Dabei rückt es die Schriftsteller*innen, die bisher in den akademischen Debatten um das Konzept Weltliteratur nur eine untergeordnete Rollen spielten, in den Mittelpunkt und untersucht ihre intra- wie auch extraliterarischen Autorbilder und -figuren auf etwaige Weltliterarizität. Es gibt Auskunft darüber, welche Faktoren die Übersetzung, Zirkulation und Rezeption, d.h. die Selektion oder Exklusion als Weltautor*in beeinflussen. Besonders an dem Buch ist die Auseinandersetzung mit lateinamerikanischer Gegenwartsliteratur, wodurch betont wird, dass Weltliteratur (auch) im Hier und Jetzt entsteht. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht erstmals anhand numerischer Indikatoren die Wirkungsweise des spanischen Literaturpreises Premio Biblioteca Breve als Kanonisierungs- und Wertungsinstrument. Der Verlagspreis aus dem Hause Seix Barral, welches heute Teil der Verlagsgruppe Planeta ist, wird dabei vor allem vor dem Hintergrund von sich wandelnden Buchmarktstrukturen seit 1958 betrachtet. Durch die Kombination literaturwissenschaftlicher Methoden und kulturwirtschaftlicher Betrachtungsweisen entsteht eine wertvolle Synthese, die einerseits in den Literaturwissenschaften Verwendung finden, aber auch für Zielgruppen aus dem Kulturbetrieb von Interesse sein kann, da sie explizit auch den ökonomisch geprägten Buchmarkt in die Analyse miteinbezieht. Durch die Auswertung von Archivmaterialien, Datenbanken und Informationen literarischer Agenturen werden Rückschlüsse auf Rezeption, Zirkulation und die dazugehörigen Buchmarkt-Dynamiken auf einer belastbaren Datenbasis ermöglicht. In Vorbereitung auf die konkreten Fallstudien im Hauptteil des Buchs, tangiert die Arbeit darüber hinaus verschiedene theoretische Felder: hierunter die Weltliteraturdebatte, Konzepte zur (Be)Wertung von Kulturgütern sowie die Konstitution von Literaturpreisen.

Die in den Kulturwissenschaften intensiv geführte Debatte um Weltliteratur kreist immer wieder um Fragen des Prozess- und Konstruktionscharakters weltliterarischer Kanonisierung. Um Aufschluss darüber zu erhalten, welche Faktoren dazu beitragen, ob ein Autor oder eine Autorin als Weltliteratur kanonisiert wird, ist die Arbeit am konkreten Material von zentraler Bedeutung. Die vorliegende Studie widmet sich in diesem Zusammenhang insbesondere den Bruchstellen, die anhand der verzögerten Weltliteratur-Werdung der brasilianischen Autorin Clarice Lispector (1920–1977) anhand von Dokumenten zu Übersetzungs- und Zirkulationsprozessen sichtbar werden. Erst im 21. Jahrhundert erfährt das literarische Werk Lispectors breite internationale Anerkennung, nachdem es zuvor immer wieder in Vergessenheit geraten war. Welche Rolle spielte dabei das brasilianische Portugiesisch als Ausgangssprache, welche die so eigene Ästhetik Clarice Lispectors im Übersetzungskontext und welche ihre Rolle als Frau? In der Analyse des komplexen Zusammenwirkens solcher Faktoren ermöglicht der Band eine neue Perspektive auf die Problematiken weltliterarischer Kanonisierungsprozesse im 20. und beginnenden 21. Jahrhundert.

The contributions of this volume aim to pay attention to these multiple material dimensions of Latin American 20^th and 21^st century literatures. From perspectives informed by materialism, sociology, book studies, and digital humanities, the articles of this volume analyze the role of publishing houses, politics of translation, mediators and gatekeepers, allowing insights into the processes that enable books to cross borders and to be transformed into globally circulating commodities. The book focusses both on material (re)sources of literary archives, key actors in literary and cultural markets, prizes and book fairs, as well as on recent dimension of the digital age. Statements of some of the leading representatives of the global publishing world complement these analyses of the operations of selection and aggregation of value to literary texts.

Die in den letzten zwanzig Jahren mit neuer Intensität geführte Debatte um den Begriff der Weltliteratur ist eng mit Fragen globaler Vernetzungen in einer polyzentrischen Welt verbunden. Zuletzt wurde Kritik insbesondere an globalisierungsaffinen Konzeptualisierungen laut: Inwiefern ist der Weltliteraturbegriff zu sehr mit politischen und ökonomischen Globalisierungsdynamiken Hand in Hand gegangen? Solche Fragen sind nicht allein in der theoretischen Kontroverse zu klären. Vielmehr muss die materielle Seite der Produktion von Weltliteratur stärker als bisher einbezogen werden.

Der Band zeigt anhand lateinamerikanischer Literaturen, wie Konstruktionsprozesse von Weltliteratur konkret ablaufen. Dazu werden Archivmaterialien ausgewertet: Notizen, Reiseberichte, Korrespondenzen zwischen Verleger/innen und Autor/innen. Gerade die lateinamerikanischen Beispiele geben Aufschluss sowohl über Institutionalisierungsprozesse in der westlichen Welt als auch über neue Perspektiven für eine zeitgemäße Kartierung von Weltliteratur jenseits etablierter Kanonisierungsdynamiken

Als Clarice Lispectors (1920–1977) Debütroman Nahe dem wilden Herzen 1943 in Rio de Janeiro erschien, war die Begeisterung so groß wie das Erstaunen: Wer war die junge Frau mit dem fremd klingenden Namen? Für ihre unbeugsame Individualität, die poetische Kraft ihrer Selbsterkundungen und ihre Erneuerung der brasilianischen Literatur wird sie von Lesern und Autoren wie Jonathan Franzen, Orhan Pamuk oder Zoë Jenny verehrt. Als Kind floh sie mit ihrer Familie aus der Ukraine und verlor mit neun Jahren ihre Mutter. El debate en torno al concepto de literatura mundial acompaña el proceso de reconfiguración del diseño global desde la Caída del Muro de Berlín y el desmantelamiento del orden bipolar en adelante. Las literaturas nacionales e incluso los constructos regionales están, desde entonces, en crisis. Fórmulas teóricas divergentes y también complementarias buscan resituar las literaturas latinoamericanas en dinámicas globales y superar, así, los marcos que se han revelado como obsoletos. En discusión con postulados idealistas y normativos, De la literatura latinoamericana a la literatura (latinoamericana) mundial propone un examen de las condiciones materiales, procesos y actores que hoy permiten –o impiden– que la literatura latinoamericana entre en circulación internacional y devenga literatura (latinoamericana) mundial. As its title indicates, the book series “Latin American Literatures of the World” presents an innovative understanding of literatures written in Latin America and the Caribbean. Informed by current perspectives on world literary studies and cultural theory, the series focuses on works that deal with the multiple global connections of Latin American literatures. This comprises determined aesthetics and forms of writing, as well as book-market-related phenomena of the worldwide reception and circulation of these literatures. Understanding Latin American literature’s transnational orientation as its essential feature, the series seeks to provide new perspectives on the global entanglements of Latin America. A special emphasis is placed on works that consider relations and exchanges with Asia, Africa and other world regions beyond the traditional transatlantic focus.

El actual debate en torno a la literatura mundial suele estar centrado, irreflexivamente, en la novela, así, cuando se indagan los procesos que regulan la circulación internacional de literatura, se arriba a hipótesis generales que en realidad deberían ser consideradas específicas de esta forma literaria. Si bien es cierto que la novela constituye hoy en día el género de reconocimiento más extendido y que para ingresar en el corpus de la literatura mundial pareciera ser requisito escribir novelas, basta revisar la historia del modernismo o de las vanguardias para advertir que no siempre ha sido así. Con foco en la poesía española, en tanto recorte ejemplar que, en condiciones de censura y persecución, ha dado lugar a figuras de alto rendimiento internacional como Federico García Lorca o Juan Ramón Jiménez, este volumen reúne contribuciones de especialistas que examinan procesos específicos que determinan la (no) circulación internacional de poesía.

El presente volumen está dedicado al estudio del complejo tema de la traducción, con especial énfasis en el contexto europeo-latinoamericano. Partiendo de la base de que tanto los textos como los códigos lingüísticos son portadores de procesos de intercambio cultural, reúne a investigadores de diferentes disciplinas filológicas con el propósito de integrar la teoría literaria con la lingüística. Uno de sus objetivos es sondear los límites del concepto de traducción entre los polos de una interpretación más restringida, concentrada en la transferencia de un códigos lingüístico a otro, y de una interpretación más abarcadora, que entiende la traducción, en un sentido muy general, como un proceso multidimensional de apropiación y transformación de textos y de lenguas.

Los catorce estudios aquí recopilados examinan múltiples situaciones de contacto entre América y Europa desde la época moderna temprana con sus reflejos en las estructuras y las prácticas lingüísticas, así como en sus escenificaciones en textos literarios y en otras formas mediales. De esta manera, revelan multifacéticos procesos de apropiación y difusión, interacciones e interdependencias entre la lengua y el lenguaje, las tradiciones escritas y los discursos, las corrientes literarias y —sobre todo en las últimas décadas— los mecanismos editoriales y de mercado.
